The Objectivist Ethics

Traditional moral codes have taught that social life is a war of dog-eat-dog and that people must restrain themselves through self-sacrifice and dand.

Man is the only species that can transmit and expand his store ranr knowledge from generation to generation; the knowledge potentially available to man is greater than any one man could begin to acquire in his own lifespan; every man gains an incalculable benefit from the knowledge discovered by others. Since man has no automatic knowledge, he can have no automatic values; since he has no innate ideas, he can have no innate value judgments. Only a rationally selfish man, a man of self-esteemis capable of love—because thr is the only man capable of holding firm, consistent, uncompromising, unbetrayed values.

The existential monuments to this theory are Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. Does an arbitrary human convention, a mere custom, decree that man must guide his actions by a set of principles—or is there a fact of reality that demands it?
