Both Ethan and Alice had traumas in from their child While visiting his brother, Nicholas, Ethan Grey met Alice Portman who was he governess to a child staying with Nicholas and his family. Yet in character they act like pretty much any other Burrowes’ hero and heroine. They were very nice couples but the volume made me struggle to keep them all straight.
Ethan is a widower with two young sons, Jeremiah and Joshua. Seeing her connection with his sons, Ethan offers her a position when her present charge moves on due to her age.

This book has the best first kiss I’ve read. Ethan Grey is the illegitimate oldest son of the late Earl of Bellefonte. Finally, horrible cover in my opinion! There were some rather shocking surprises, especially I am loving that Burrowes connects all her stories in so many ways.
I am that kind of reader and I am enjoying them all. Karma is a b! Or that was my impression. Ethan knows that Joshua is probably not his burdowes, but that in no way alters his attitude toward the boy, which makes it all the more poignant when, near the end of the book, we discover the truth.
Refresh and try again. This was a wonderful book! To her credit, Grace Burrowes’ protagonists, one or both of them, usually have some element of their character that is distinctive.

They grow up together and are the best of friends until a misunderstanding on their father’s part separates them completely. He is somewhat estranged from his siblings, even though he and Nick were very close as children. They both had baggage from their youths to surmount. Etjan 07, Jackie rated it liked it. These characters, however have strength of purpose to rise above their pasts to find happily ever after with the help of two precocious little boys, two ponies, a headstrong gelding, loving family, and understanding friends.
So that’s the level of conflict after two chapters. Deliberately, as he discovered later.
Ethan learned that his two young boys who were also visiting Nicholas, had been abused by the teacher that he had hired for his two boys. Reclusive Ethan Grey is almost the exact opposite of his garrulous, younger half-brother Nicholas Haddonfield, now Earl Bellefonte. After a second reading I have to lower the rating of this book – it didn’t delight me nearly as much the second time around. They each grow to care about the other and to sweetly heal each other.
Ethan is wounded in spirit. Alice Portman has more in common with Ethan than she can comfortably admit. We get little peeks into what caused his trauma. It was still great, but loses a star because it didn’t quite stick the landing. And yet both manage to live lives burrowss do not take their pain out on others through the years. The one negative thing I have to say is that it is rather too much of a coincidence that both Ethan and Alice suffered burrowwes the hands of the same person, but that really is all I can find to criticise.
There’s just something about that one that appeals to me.
Watching Ethan;s relationship grow with his sons was lovely and seeing how affectionate Nicholas was with his brother was endearing. Various neighbors and relatives pop in from time to time — some of them from previous books grac some from books yet to come — and some play an important role in unfolding events. The premise and the characters are interesting but when it gets to the final third of the book, it tends to go downhill for me.
Burrrowes and Alice both find healing and forgiveness in each others arms. Governess has a bad hip, doesn’t enjoy physical exercise o DNF. A Day for Love.
